GRANDPARENTS

According to a 2016 article by Alejandra Cancino from PBS.org, he states that,” Nationwide, 2.7 million grandparents are raising grandchildren … child welfare agencies are reporting an increase in the number of children, especially infants, taken from parents battling drug addictions and mental health issues." 1

Statistics have shown that more Grandparents are now raising their grandchildren.

The Children

  • 90,000 (4%) of children live with a relative with no parent present.
  • 288,297 (11.6%) children under 18 live in homes where householders are grandparents or other relatives.

      ▪ 218,708 (8.8%) of these children live with grandparents.

      ▪ 69,589 (2.8%) of these children live with other relatives.

The Grandparents:

  • 115,245 grandparents are householders responsible for their grandchildren who live with them. Of these:

      ▪ 41,598 (36.1%) do not have parents present.

      ▪ 74,477 (64.6%) are under age 60.

      ▪ 66,381 (57.6%) are in the workforce.

      ▪ 27,311 (23.7%) are in poverty.

      ▪ 30,469 (26.5%) have a disability.

      ▪ 36,072 (31.3%) are unmarried.

 

▪ Race/Ethnicity:

58,199 (50.5%) are white (not Hispanic or Latino) 48,288 (41.9%) are black or African American 6,223 (5.4%) are Hispanic or Latino origin 1,729 (1.5%) are Asian 461 (0.4%) are American Indian or Alaska Native 0 (0.0%) are Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander 922 (0.8%) are multiracial 1,613 (1.4%) are some other race

Grandparents Raising and Nurturing Dependents with Disabilities: 

Supportive services to grandparents raising grandchildren with developmental disabilities, chronic health conditions and learning and behavior disorders. Services include support groups, individual/family case management, training, education, and referrals. All services are provided at no charge.
